President's Message Dear friends, supporters, donors and volunteers,
I enjoy looking at the photos of the children of Africa, reading about their stories and successes. I am amazed at the journey they have traveled and the many miles they walk each day. Africa remains the poorest continent in the world. Malaria claims more than 2.3 million African lives a year, and most of these are young children.
HIV/AIDS claims 1,000 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births and 45 infant deaths per 1,000 live births. The region has the highest maternal and neo-natal mortality rates in the world. More than 13 million men, women and children have died of AIDS and 25-28 million are now living with AIDS. More than 80 percent are in their productive years and two-thirds are female. The number of orphans with AIDS is expected to rise from 11 million to 20 million by the year 2010. What do we do? Systematic education reform is critical in today´s world. However, AIDS continues to decimate the ranks of qualified teachers. Then who will teach these children?
The Ssejinja Children´s foundation sponsors a wide range of activities to prevent infectious diseases, train communities, and teachers. Helping young children live a good moral life through counseling and abstinence.
Poor governance has brought about violent conflict and political unrest in Africa. Power imbalance and resources and income inequality, are widening the gap between the rich and the poor.
HIV/AIDS and the long distances between my village and doctors are the roots of difficulties of pregnant women in Bira.
I invite you to walk the many miles and learn for yourself the amazing stories of the children of Africa. You will be uplifted at the big dreams they have and the destiny they have determined to take. Thank you for what you do to allow lives to be transformed through your donations. Your continued support will make an everlasting legacy that will span generations in the minds of orphans in Africa.
