The Republic of Uganda is located in East Africa. It borders Tanzania and Rwanda in the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the west, Sudan in the north and Kenya in the east. Uganda is just slightly smaller than Oregon, 241,038 square km. It has been called "the Pearl of Africa" and is home to Lake Victoria and the source of the Nile.
Uganda’s population is 34.6 million, including approximately 2.5 million orphans. Due primarily to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, 50% of Uganda’s population is under the age of 15.Approximately 1.2 million Ugandans are living with HIV/AIDS. AIDS and other diseases have brought a shorter life expectancy (53 years) and high infant mortality rates. Good medical care is often scarce.
